Overview

We're pleased to extend an on demand option for the 2024 Geriatric Oncology for the Advanced Practice Provider course, originally held live on April 23, 2024.

Aging is a risk factor for the development of cancer. As the United States population ages, the need for clinicians skilled in the care of older adults with cancer increases. Research, however, suggests that common geriatric syndromes along with many psychosocial needs of older adult oncology patients are often unintentionally overlooked or under-addressed. This evidence-based program is designed to optimize the care of older adult oncology patients by advancing the knowledge and expertise of advanced practice providers.

This on demand provides a comprehensive overview of essential geriatric oncology topics, including the use of comprehensive geriatric assessments, effective communication strategies for older adults, and resilience-building techniques. Further examine the psychosocial aspects of care, including ethical and legal considerations, the importance of social support systems, and nuanced identification of depression within this demographic.

In purchasing this on demand, you'll gain access to a series of recorded lectures from the live course accompanied by PDFs of the speakers' presentations, followed by session panel discussions with the faculty. Session topics include:

Advancing Geriatric Oncology Knowledge for the Advanced Practice Provider

  • Geriatric Assessment and Communication for the Advanced Practice Provider (Beatriz Korc-Grodzicki, MD, PhD)
  • Geriatric Co-management: The Amazing Tale of Two Sides (Armin Shahrokni MD, MPH)

Psychosocial Care of the Older Adult with Cancer

  • Social Support for Older Adults with Cancer (Angela Katrichis, LCSW-R, APHSW-C)
  • Depression Management in Older Adults with Cancer (Rebecca Saracino, PhD)
  • Ageism in Cancer Care (Richard Li, MS, RN, FNP-BC)
  • Digital Health for Geriatric Oncology (Colm Mac Eochagáin MD)

Person-Centered Care

  • Shared Decision Making and Capacity: Avoiding Over and Undertreatment (Clark DuMontier, MD, MPH)
  • Legal Aspects of Medical Decision Making (Donnaline Richman, BSN, MN, Esq.)
  • Ethical Considerations When Caring for the Older Adult with Cancer (Liz Blackler, MBE, LCSW-R)
  • Recognizing Financial Toxicity in Cancer Care (Fumiko Chino, MD)

Geriatric Oncology: The Patient Perspective

  • Daily Control Beliefs in Middle Aged and Older Adults with Chronic Conditions (Kathryn E. Swaim, BA)
  • Supporting Dignity for Older Adults with Serious Cancer: Benefits of Communion During Dignity Therapy (Mary Kate Koch, PhD)
