--

Liver cancer is the fourth most common cancer for both genders in Africa. Viewed as a whole, the risk factors in Africa are similar to those encountered in other parts of the world. However, these risk factors appear to differ by region. Many of the risk factors could be avoided with comprehensive national strategies, medical advice, and personal decisions that are guided by appropriate education. Prevention strategies include vaccination against hepatitis B and the fight against aflatoxin. In Africa, where majority of the countries are low-middle income the costly nature of theses measures remain an impediment.

The overall survival of liver cancer stands out at only 3 months in Africa compared to other regions in the world. This is mainly driven by late-stage presentation and limited access to the most novel therapeutic approaches. The hands-on experience of several members of the steering committee about the limited available options or the applicability of alternative approaches for surveillance and therapy would help validate the appropriate and accessible management. The combination of local risk factors, economics, culture, and potentially biology create a unique environment for each region. Therefore, the guidelines designed for one environment may not translate well to another. This justifies the critical need for prevention, early detection and treatment guidelines that reflect the available and alternative options across the continent.

A key element of the proposed initiative is to join the entire African continent under the same guidelines with added distribution, based on geo-economic GDP per capita regions. An example is the NCCN Harmonized Guidelines for Sub-Saharan Africa, which is based on the NCCN North America guidelines, but highlight solely the available treatment options in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Middle East North Africa (MENA) region NCCN initiatives aim to cover Northern Africa.

Live Virtual Format

This live conference will take place virtually over two half-days and will be delivered using Zoom. The program will consist of introductory lectures from experts in Africa and the United States as well as interactive sessions where all attendees are encouraged to provide input in helping to build liver cancer guidelines for Africa. We are excited to bring together colleagues in Africa and from around the world to help with this initiative. After this program, we aim to publish the guidelines, distribute them throughout Africa, and present them at major medical meetings. We anticipate the need to host this program annual to continue analyzing the effectiveness of the guidelines.
