Overview

Early recognition and management of premalignant gastrointestinal conditions are key in the prevention and early detection of cancer. As we understand more of the pathogenesis of these disorders, treatment algorithms continue to change. Emerging endoscopic techniques also play an important role in diagnosis and surveillance.

This one day course will focus on the approach to managing gastrointestinal premalignant disorders. It will update the participant on the diagnosis, management and surveillance of various premalignant conditions involving the luminal GI tract, liver and pancreas.

Topics will include medical, endoscopic and surgical management of Barrett’s esophagus, gastric intestinal metaplasia, gastric carcinoids, hereditary gastric cancer, endoscopic imaging and resection techniques in the stomach, surgical management of hereditary gastric cancer, surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreas cyst lesions, surveillance of individuals at high-risk for pancreas cancer, Lynch syndrome, hereditary GI polyposis syndromes, surgical management of hereditary colon cancer syndromes, early age onset colon cancer, serrated colon polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and endoscopic management of large colon polyps. The course will utilize didactic lectures as well as interactive clinical case presentations.

The target audience will include physicians and other healthcare professionals who take care of patients with gastrointestinal, liver and pancreaticobiliary disorders, including gastroenterologists, surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, clinical geneticists, surgical pathologists, fellows, residents, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and registered nurses.

Objectives
  1. Understand the clinical presentation, diagnosis, genetics and management of Lynch syndrome
  2. Become familiar with the diagnosis and management of Barrett's esophagus, including endoscopic therapy for dysplasia
  3. Discuss the role of antireflux surgery in Barrett's esophagus
  4. Review the diagnosis and management of gastric metaplasia, dysplasia and carcinoids
  5. Describe new endoscopic imaging and resection techniques in the stomach
  6. Identify the approach to surgical management of hereditary gastric cancer
  7. Become aware of surveillance strategies for hepatocellular carcinoma
  8. Recognize medical and surgical management options for pancreas cyst lesions
  9. Examine the risk factors, presentation and surveillance for early age onset colon cancer
  10. Learn about the pathology diagnosis, classification and clinical implications of serrated colon polyps
  11. Determine the endoscopic surveillance for inflammatory bowel disease, and management of IBD-associated dyplasia
  12. Evaluate innovative endoscopic techniques for treating large, laterally spreading colon polyps
