Overview

This course is focused on cognition and communication for all types and levels of Health Care Professionals providing care for older adults with cancer though lectures Friday and an optional workshop on Saturday. 

Friday, October 4th, will consist of high-level discussions surrounding all types of cognitive impairments commonly seen in the older cancer patient.  There will be a focus on communication based concerns and barriers when interacting with the older cancer patient (including caregivers and family members), evaluation of decision-making capacity, as well as how to work with an interpreter for patients with dementia and may experience a language barrier.

  • Live Simulcast Available for Day 1* - We are pleased to offer a live simulcast option for day 1 (Friday, October 4). CME and ABIM MOC credit is offered for the live simulcast and active participation is required during the course. We do hope you will attend in person but understand that can sometimes be a challenge so we are happy to offer the live simulcast as an option. Registration for the simulcast is required; to register, please select the "Live Simulcast" option during course registration. Please note that MSK employees located in the New York City metro area, are encouraged to attend this course in person.

Saturday, October 5th, is a Geriatric Communication Skills Training Workshop comprised of a specific experiential learning methodology that will immerse participants in applying newly taught skills in a simulated relevant clinical environment. Additional fees apply and space is limited. 

This course is directed towards oncologists, primary care physicians, geriatricians, advanced care practitioners, oncology nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of older adult cancer patients.

Objectives
  1. Provide an overview on dementia, delirium, depression: its detection and care
  2. Define decision making capacity and explain its legal implications
  3. Appreciate decision making challenges and learn to assess in older adults with cancer and cognitive syndromes
  4. Recognize ageism and appreciate how it interferes with the medical care of older adults with cancer
  5. Become familiar with the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment in the evaluation of older cancer patients with cognitive changes or at risk for cognitive changes
  6. Understand the principles of shared decision making
  7. Observe and practice skills for successful facilitation of shared decision-making with an older adult with cancer and his/her caregiver

Cancellation Policy

The Live Simulcast and Fellow/Resident Rates are non-refundable. For all other rates, If you cancel your participation in this course, your registration fee, less a $75 administrative fee, will be refunded when email notification is received by the MSK Office of Continuing Medical Education (MSK CME) at least 7 days prior to the first day of the course ([email protected]).

Cancellations or no-shows after this date are not eligible for a refund. MSK CME reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course due to unforeseen circumstances. In the unlikely event we must cancel or postpone this course, we will refund the registration fee in full, but are not responsible for any related costs, charges, or expenses to participants, including fees incurred by airline/travel/lodging agencies. At any time, you may substitute another registrant in your place after contacting MSK CME with the relevant information.

AMA Credit Designation Statement

ABIM MOC Recognition Statement

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn up to 14.50 Medical Knowledge and Practice Assessment MOC points and Patient Safety MOC credit in the American Board of Internal Medicine's (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
