Overview

Live Virtual Experience

Dear Colleagues:

The COVID-19 pandemic has created tremendous challenges for all of us in treating our patients impacted by cancer. As we continue to acquire knowledge about this novel coronavirus, we must remain vigilant so that we are able to provide them with safe, high quality, evidence-based care.

The emergence of virtual platforms in the era of physical distancing provides an important opportunity for us to meet online. Oncology Acupuncture: From Neuroscience to Patient Wellbeing will take place as a two-day live virtual symposium on Friday, November 6th, and Saturday, November 7th, 2020. We will use our state-of-the-art simulcast technology to broadcast this course live. Through a combination of didactic presentations, live panel discussions, and special breakout workshops, we will come together to connect with leaders from MSK and around the world to evaluate the latest evidence for oncology acupuncture.

In the midst of this public health crisis, we still have much to learn. Over the course of this symposium, we will explore the neuroscience and clinical evidence of acupuncture and start determining how to safely move forward with the delivery of acupuncture in cancer settings. We look forward to gathering with you for the first-ever virtual oncology acupuncture symposium.

Sincerely,

Jun J. Mao, MD, MSCE and Ting Bao, MD, DABMA, MS
Course Co-Directors

This symposium will focus on the neuroscientific mechanisms of acupuncture for pain and symptom management and its application in cancer care. We will connect neuroscience and basic research with clinical evidence for oncology acupuncture symptom management. Our international panelists will also present the progress and challenges of providing acupuncture services in the oncology setting.

The expanded two-day live virtual program will include:

  • Dynamic live discussions with global experts on the role of acupuncture in treating cancer pain and other treatment-related side effects including insomnia, cognitive impairment, and gastrointestinal issues
  • Presentations and group discussions on acupuncture in the COVID-19 era
  • Panels that include patient advocates to highlight the patient perspective with pain and symptom management
  • Interactive breakout workshops where you can learn strategies and ideas for implementing oncology acupuncture programs for your organization
    • Please note that you must select the workshop you would like to attend at course registration; options include:
      • Designing and Conducting High Quality Acupuncture Clinical Trials in Oncology
      • Building Oncology Acupuncture Programs: Present and Future
      • Challenges and Opportunities of Training Oncology Acupuncturists: Lessons of On-site and Virtual Learning
      • Implementing Acupressure Self-Care Interventions for Oncology Patients
        and Healthcare Workers

This symposium is intended for health care providers (physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and acupuncturists) who diagnose, manage, and treat side effects of cancer treatment and those who develop programs (administrators) to improve quality of life for people with cancer.

MSK CME is pleased to offer Society for Acupuncture Research (SAR) members a discount to attend this symposium (details below).

Objectives
  1. Describe the mechanisms of acupuncture involving central modulation and peripheral stimulation
  2. Evaluate the current evidence of acupuncture for symptom management
  3. Determine strategies for engaging healthcare providers and health care systems to disseminate and implement acupuncture research findings in cancer care
