Overview

We are pleased to announce the first annual Geriatric Oncology for the Advanced Practice Provider course.

Aging is a risk factor for the development of cancer. As the United States population ages, the need for clinicians skilled in the care of older adults with cancer will increase. Research, however, suggests that common geriatric syndromes and many psychosocial needs of older adult oncology patients are often unintentionally overlooked or under-addressed. This one-day evidence based virtual program is designed to optimize the care of older adult oncology patients by advancing the knowledge and expertise of advanced practice providers.

Through her extensive academic and clinical contributions to the field of geriatric medicine, current president of The John A. Hartford Foundation, Dr. Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, will share her insights and geriatrics expertise as keynote speaker.

Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of common geriatric syndromes and disease processes that can impact older adults prior to, during, and after cancer treatment will be discussed. A general overview of key geriatric oncology topics will be provided, including physiologic changes associated with advanced age and risk factors associated with cancer-directed therapies, the use of the comprehensive geriatric assessment as a method for risk stratification and interventions prior to cancer-directed therapies, and recognition of atypical presentation of disease when developing a differential diagnosis. Additionally, cognitive impairment, cancer screening guidelines, chemotherapy toxicity tools, common cancer-related treatment side effects, and polypharmacy will be addressed. Participants will also be engaged in important topics such as Inclusivity and providing care to LGBTQ+ older adults, transitional care management, and understanding Medicare guidelines and community resources aimed at keeping older adults as independent as possible. Content proficiency will be assessed with pre and post-conference evaluations.

Who Should Attend

This course is designed for advanced practice providers, registered nurses, CRNAs, physicians (residents, fellows, and attending physicians), respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, case managers, and other healthcare professionals in medicine and surgery who provide care for the older adult. Please note that we are pleased to offer complimentary registration for Residents, Fellows, APP Students and Nursing Students to attend this program.

Live Virtual Format

This live virtual program will be delivered using Zoom. We encourage all attendees to download the Zoom app prior to the start of the course (zoom.us/download). CME credit will be offered for this live virtual program. Detailed access and credit instructions will be emailed to attendees prior to the start of the course.

Objectives
  1. Gain competence in the comprehensive management (identification, diagnosis, and treatment) of common geriatric comorbidities and conditions in the oncology setting as well as sequelae of cancer and cancer treatments in older adults
  2. Recognize the importance of the comprehensive geriatric assessment as a diagnostic tool prior to the initiation of cancer directed therapies
  3. Discuss cancer-screening guidelines and recommendations for older cancer patients
  4. Describe chemotherapy toxicity tools and their use in the older adult population
  5. Appreciate the role of the interdisciplinary team in the assessment of social support
  6. Master basic Medicare guidelines related to discharge planning and homecare services
