Overview

Aging is a risk factor for the development of cancer. As the United States population ages, the need for clinicians skilled in the care of older adults with cancer will increase. Research however suggests that common geriatric syndromes and many psychosocial needs of older adult oncology patients are often unintentionally overlooked or under-addressed.

This one-day evidence-based virtual program is designed to optimize the care of older adult oncology patients by advancing the knowledge and expertise of advanced practice providers. A general overview of key geriatric oncology topics will be provided including: the use of the comprehensive geriatric assessment; communication strategies in the assessment of older adults; and assessment of fitness versus frailty, resilience, and risk stratification prior to cancer-directed therapies.

Additionally, the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of cognitive impairment will be addressed, including the role of neuropsychiatric testing, cognitive rehabilitation, and psychopharmacology interventions. Participants will be introduced to geriatric collaborative programs in the context of breast medicine and bone marrow transplantation, and the intersection of geriatric medicine and palliative care will be discussed. Comprehensive geriatric care will be highlighted in academic, community-based, and international settings. Content proficiency will be assessed with pre and post-conference evaluations.

Keynote Presenter

We’re excited to announce our keynote presenter this year is Martine Puts, RN, PhD, an Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of Toronto. Dr. Puts has contributed extensively to the field of geriatric medicine academically and clinically as a Research Chair in the Care of Frail Older Adults in Canada. Dr. Puts will share her insights and geriatrics expertise in an exciting keynote address at this year's program.

Who Should Attend

This program is designed for advanced practice providers, registered nurses, CRNAs, physicians (residents, fellows, and attending physicians), respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, case managers, and other healthcare professionals in medicine and surgery who provide care for the older adult.

We are pleased to offer complimentary registration for nursing students in addition to registrants residing in low and lower-middle income countries to attend this program.
