Overview

Neuro-oncology is a uniquely specialized field requiring providers to have advanced knowledge and understanding to optimize patient care. The lectures on day one will provide a foundation for Advanced Practice Providers, and other healthcare professionals, who wish to broaden their knowledge of neuro-oncology and understand the complex management of patients living with cancers of the central nervous system. Topics on this day will include an introduction to neuroanatomy, management of primary and metastatic brain tumors, leptomeningeal disease, central nervous system lymphoma, and the rapid assessment and interventions of neuro-oncologic emergencies. Best practices in supportive care and communication techniques the Advanced Practice Provider can utilize during difficult discussions with the neuro-oncology patient and their caregivers will also be presented.

Day two offers the opportunity to select one specialty track to refine your learning experience:

  • Track 1 "Advanced Concepts in Adult Neuro-Oncology" will explore the recent advances in diagnosing and treating this complex patient population.
  • Track 2 "Care of the Pediatric Neuro-oncology Population" will explore the implications of central nervous system cancers in the pediatric population. Nuances in treatment and prognosis for our youngest patients will be presented.

Who Should Attend

This course is intended for Advanced Practice Providers, nurse practitioner students, physician assistant students, clinical nurse specialists, registered nurses, and physicians. We are pleased to offer complimentary registration to nursing students and registrants residing in low and lower-middle income countries.

This program will be held virtually via Zoom. Access details will be emailed prior to the start of the course.

Online Syllabus

Registered attendees will receive access to an online syllabus after the course, which includes select PDFs of the faculty presentations (slides) and recorded videos from the course. Attendees must check in on the day of the course in order to receive access to the syllabus.

Objectives
  1. Provide an overview of the basic neuroanatomy of the brain and spine.
  2. Interpret the radiologic findings in cancers of the central nervous system.
  3. Review primary and secondary cancers of the central nervous system.
  4. Gain competence in the recognition and treatment of neuro-oncologic emergencies.
  5. Employ evidence-based practice in supportive care for the neuro-oncologic patient and caregiver.
  6. Explore the advances in novel therapies and clinical trials for cancers of the central nervous system.
  7. Discuss the implications of a neuro-oncologic diagnosis in the pediatric population.
