Overview

The past several years have seen marked improvements in the management of patients with HPB malignancy, which has led to better outcomes and longer survival. The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center HPB Commemoration consists of three parts:

(1) A memorial Symposium to Leslie H. Blumgart for his many contributions to HPB surgery
(2) A Symposium to celebrate the career of Nancy E. Kemeny and her life’s work treating metastatic liver cancer
(3) An update of advances from the David M. Rubenstein Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research

While the contributions of many individual investigators have played a role, two towering figures stand out for their significant and far-reaching work that has fundamentally changed practice in many ways. The first two days of this event celebrate the careers and many contributions of Dr. Leslie Blumgart, who sadly passed away in September 2022, and Dr. Nancy Kemeny, who will leave the practice of oncology later this year.

Thursday, November 30
The Leslie H. Blumgart, MD Memorial Symposium

Leslie H. Blumgart, MD was an internationally renowned surgeon, one of a small group of pioneering investigators who established the foundation for safe and effective hepatic resection. His work helped transform hepatic resection from a high-risk and highly morbid procedure to a routine operation that is now performed widely for many indications. This change, a major factor in the improved outcome for many patients with primary and metastatic liver cancer, has benefited tens of thousands of patients over the years.

The Leslie H. Blumgart, MD Memorial Symposium brings together friends, colleagues, and former trainees in a tribute to one of the great leaders in academic surgery. The program celebrates his life and how his immense contributions impacted the field of HPB surgery - and also his personal influence on the careers of many of us. This symposium will conclude with a Networking Reception from 5:30-7:00 pm.

Friday, December 1
Nancy E. Kemeny, MD Celebratory Symposium

Nancy E. Kemeny, MD has devoted her career to the treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer and has almost single-handedly established a critical role for regional intrahepatic (HAI) chemotherapy, both in the adjuvant and advanced setting. This therapy was initially not widely accepted outside of MSK, but its efficacy has since been demonstrated and it is now used widely throughout North America and beyond. Its role in other diseases, specifically intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, is under active investigation.

The Nancy E. Kemeny, MD Celebratory Symposium will begin with a keynote presentation by Dr. Kemeny on the history and present use of locoregional therapy for liver metastases. The program will consist of state-of-the-art didactic sessions and case presentations on the biology of liver metastases, rationale and types of locoregional approaches as well as the future of HAI therapy. This symposium will conclude with a Networking Reception from 4:30-5:30 pm.

Saturday, December 2
Pancreas Cancer Progress Update

The HPB Commemoration concludes with a half-day Symposium, which will provide an update on research advances from the David M. Rubenstein Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research and showcases the state-of-the-science in pancreas adenocarcinoma.

The program will begin with the David M. Rubenstein Award Lecture, presented by Andrew M. Lowy, MD, FACS of University of California San Diego. Following this lecture, faculty will showcase current and novel therapeutic approaches in this disease with a vision to the future.

Who Should Attend

The target audience for this Symposium includes medical and surgical oncologists, gastroenterologists, internal medicine specialists, pathologists, geneticists, pharmacists, supportive care staff, advanced practice practitioners, nurses, trainees, and other disciplines. MSK is also pleased to invite patients and families to attend on a complimentary basis. Please see registration details below.

Symposium Location

This three-day event will be held in-person only on the campus of Memorial Sloan Kettering, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
