Overview

Orthopaedic oncology is a highly specialized area that focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of primary bone and soft tissue tumors as well as musculoskeletal metastases in other cancers. This complex patient population requires specialized care delivered collaboratively by a multidisciplinary team that requires up-to-date knowledge regarding treatment options and advances in care.

The purpose of this symposium is to provide clinicians with a general overview of the evaluation, diagnosis, management, and outcomes of common musculoskeletal bone and soft tissue tumors including Ewing’s sarcoma, chondrosarcoma, and osteosarcoma, as well metastatic musculoskeletal lesions. Additional sections will utilize a lecture and case study-based approach to discuss best practices in surgical and non-surgical techniques, post-op complications, and oncological emergencies.

Attendees will receive access to an online syllabus after the symposium, which includes select of video recordings of the lectures.

Target Audience

The target audience for this program includes nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified registered nurse anesthetists, physicians, and nurses who care for oncology patients. We are pleased to offer complimentary registration for nursing students and registrants residing in low and lower-middle income countries.

This symposium is set to be an exclusively live virtual experience. Detailed Zoom access and participation instructions will be provided to registrants prior to the start of the program.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this symposium, learners will be able to:

  1. Compare the evaluation of primary bone and soft tissue tumors vs metastatic disease
  2. Describe the most common primary bone and soft tissue sarcomas including Ewing's sarcoma, osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma
  3. Review common treatment modalities for the pediatric and adult patient with a primary bone tumor vs metastatic bone disease
  4. Describe novel surgical approaches in the orthopaedic oncology patient
  5. Identify post-operative complications associated with various orthopaedic procedures and their management
  6. Recognize oncologic emergencies including compartment syndrome and spinal cord compression
  7. Explore the psychosocial, rehabilitation and long term follow up needs of the orthopedic oncology patient
