Overview

Join us for the Surgical Section Meeting of the National Medical Association's Annual Convention and Scientific Assembly, a gathering of healthcare leaders, surgeons, and researchers. This complimentary event will showcase cutting-edge advancements in surgical techniques and address critical issues of health equity across diverse communities. Through a series of presentations and interactive discussions, this one-day in person meeting will cover a broad spectrum of topics, including:

  • The Evolution of Axillary Surgery for Breast Cancer: Highlighting the latest advancements in axillary surgery and their impact on treatment outcomes.
  • Precision Therapy in Rectal Cancer: Exploring the frontier of precision medicine in rectal cancer treatment and its effects on patient quality of life.
  • Genetics and Underrepresented Populations: Discussing the benefits of genetic testing for cancer susceptibility in diverse populations.
  • Disaster Preparedness in Surgery: Learning essential protocols and strategies for surgical teams during emergencies.
  • The Role of Women in Ensuring Community Health: Highlighting women's pivotal roles in healthcare leadership and community health advocacy.
  • Equity in Surgical Residency: Addressing equity and diversity in surgical residency programs and initiatives for inclusive training environments.
  • Artificial Intelligence and Technologies in Surgery: Discovering the impact of AI, robotics, and advanced technologies on surgical practices.

The conference is designed for surgical residents, fellows, and attendings. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with peers, engage in collaborative discussions, and connect with industry leaders and innovators. 

The mission of the Surgical Section of the National Medical Association (SS-NMA) is to stimulate, support and sustain, amongst all of its members, interest and excellence in all facets of the clinical practice of surgery. Registration is complimentary and open to both SS-NMA members and non-members.
Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, attendees will be able to:

  1. Analyze the evolution of axillary surgery techniques, including their historical context, advancements, and impact on improving surgical outcomes and patient quality of life.
  2. Evaluate the role of precision therapy (e.g., targeted therapies, personalized medicine) in the treatment of rectal cancer, assessing its efficacy and potential challenges.
  3. Increase the representation of underrepresented minority populations in genetic testing for cancer susceptibility.
  4. Examine and discuss disaster preparedness plans for surgical teams, ensuring readiness to respond effectively during emergencies and optimize patient outcomes.
  5. Assess the contributions of women in healthcare leadership and community health, and strategize ways to enhance their role in promoting community health and equity.
  6. Describe initiatives within surgical residency programs to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity, fostering a supportive environment for trainees from diverse backgrounds.
  7. Evaluate the integration of artificial intelligence, robotics, and other advanced technologies in surgical practice, considering their impact on surgical precision, efficiency, and patient outcomes.

ABS CC Recognition Statement

Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn 6.50 credits toward the CME and Self-Assessment requirement(s) of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.

MOC/CC points will be reported to your board within 45 days upon completion of the course.
