Overview

After a bone marrow or stem cell transplant, individuals face many challenges. It may take an individual several months for the blood cells to regenerate and up to two years before their immune system is fully functional. Up until this point, the patient will continue to be at an increased risk for infection, and for allogeneic patients Graft Vs Host Disease. One commonly overlooked obstacle during and post transplantation is understanding how diet affects the gut bacteria and the role of nutrition in outcomes after transplant.

This symposium will focus on the nutritional approaches adopted by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) centers, the nutritional impact on Graft vs Host Disease (GVHD), and oral considerations prior to transplant. We will also be discussing the neutropenic diet and how microbiome impacts nutritional care.

Guest speakers from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center will join us to discuss these topics.

Target Audience

The target audience for this symposium includes physicians, advanced practice practitioners, nurses, social workers, dietitians, oncologists, hematologists, and other disease specific specialists.

In Partnership with the The Bone Marrow Foundation

The Bone Marrow Foundation, founded in 1992, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for bone marrow, stem cell, and cord blood transplant patients and their families by providing vital financial assistance, comprehensive resources, educational information, physician referrals, and emotional support programs. Transplants treat more than 70 life-threatening illnesses including cancers, genetic disorders, and other diseases. The Bone Marrow Foundation is the only organization of its kind that does not limit assistance to a specific disease, type of transplant, or age range. All of the Foundation’s programs and services are offered to patients and their families free of charge.

For more information on The Bone Marrow Foundation’s programs, please visit: bonemarrow.org.
For registration and additional information please call 212-838-3029 or email [email protected].

Objectives
  1. To provide up-to-date information on nutritional approaches adopted by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) centers.
  2. To provide up-to-date information on the nutritional impact on Graft vs Host Disease (GVHD).
  3. To provide up-to-date information on oral considerations prior to transplant.
