Overview

Important Announcement:
Registration for this event has reached capacity and is currently closed.

We will be recording this event and the materials will be available on-demand shortly. Please email [email protected] if you have any questions.

This CME event will focus on six key areas in which the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted previously unasked questions regarding cancer treatments; including whether cancer surgery is essential or elective; and what effect cancer treatments have on COVID-19 patients. Other topics cover virology, epidemiology and therapeutics; and biotechnology and telemedicine in the quest to continue providing cancer care while keeping pace with an unpredictable, rapidly developing, and widespread disease.

Topics and Objectives

Lessons Learned in the Critical Care Management of COVID-19 Patients
Neil A. Halpern, MD, MCCM, FCCP, FACP

  • Determine how to rapidly approach a strange, new and unpredictable critical illness
  • Learn how to accommodate rapidly expanding ICU capacity
  • Understand the benefits of a robust ICU informatics infrastructure

Is Cancer Surgery Elective and The Impact of COVID-19 on Surgical Outcomes
Jeffrey Drebin, MD, PhD

  • Understand differences between elective and essential surgery and approaches to surgical triage at times of resource limitations
  • Recognize the impact of surgical treatment delay on outcomes for different types of solid tumors
  • Understand the impact of perioperative COVID-19 on the morbidity and mortality of cancer surgery.

SARS-CoV-2 Virology, Epidemiology and Therapeutics
Tobias M. Hohl, MD, PhD

  • Understand the basic mechanisms of viral transmission
  • Define the mechanisms for entry of the virus and pathophysiology
  • Define therapeutic options and studies for treatment of SARS-CoV-2

COVID-19 Prevention, Health Care Worker and Patient Safety, and Testing
Mini Kamboj, MD

  • Discuss available literature on testing and appropriate PPE in the health care environment and outcomes
  • Review contact tracing efforts, goals and outcomes
  • Discuss available literature on testing for patients and safety

Impact of Cancer Care on COVID-19 Outcomes
Elizabeth V. Robilotti, MD, MPH

  • Review available data of COVID-19 severity in the hospitalized cancer patient including number ICU patients
  • Define risk factors for the severity of COVID-19 illness
  • Define severity of COVID-19 illness in cancer patient based on treatment modality including chemotherapy, targeted treatments, and immune-check point inhibitors

Caring for the COVID-19 Patient Through Cohort Monitoring and Telemedicine and Resuming Treatment for Recovered COVID-19 Patients
Diane Reidy-Lagunes, MD

  • Define how to care for the COVID-19 positive patient in the outpatient setting using biotechnology, telemedicine, and a cohort monitoring team approach
  • Define consensus guidelines on which patients to test for COVID-19 prior to treatment with antineoplastic therapy
  • Review consensus guidelines for resumption of antineoplastic therapy after the recovery of COVID-19 in the cancer patient
