Overview

After the immense success of our last five-year courses, we are excited to be back with our 6th Annual Workshop on Confocal Microscopy for Cutaneous Diagnostics.

Reflectance Confocal Microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive device that images skin lesions at high resolution in vivo similar to traditional pathology. It has acquired CPT codes in the US. This course is tailored for both novices and expert clinicians practicing RCM in clinics. EVCM can rapidly image freshly excised tissue (without tissue processing and cutting) and is being explored as an alternative to frozen sectioning for tumor margin assessment and rapid tissue evaluation for dermatology. As RCM is performed in conjunction to dermoscopy examination, this year we will start with a live refresher dermoscopy course by world-renowned dermoscopist Dr. Ashfaq. A. Marghoob.

For this live course, we have assembled an expert, national and international, confocal faculty. We will have multiple, fun Kahoot! quizzes to test your knowledge and simulate your appetite for learning. During break sessions, the attendees will have opportunity to interact with the faculty.

At the end of the course, the attendees will develop familiarity with the basics of in vivo and ex vivo confocal microscopy, learn to differentiate routinely encountered benign cutaneous neoplasm from malignant neoplasm, and integrate RCM in their routine clinical workflow.

Day 1: Dermoscopy and RCM (In Vivo)

  • NEW! Live dermoscopy session (1.5 hours) with Dr. Ashfaq A. Marghoob highlighting dermoscopy to histopathology correlates
  • Basics: Fundamentals of RCM, terminology (based on Delphi-consensus), and RCM features for neoplastic lesions
  • RCM for assessing skin cancer risk (photoaging, photodamage etc.)
  • Integrating RCM in clinics - case discussion with experts
  • Practical accepts of RCM clinical integration: panel discussion from early adopters of this technology in academic institutes and private clinics
  • RCM surgical integration and treatment monitoring case-discussion

Day 2: RCM Practical Aspect, Surgical Integration, Treatment Monitoring, Ex Vivo Confocal Microscopy (EVCM), and Hands-on Workshop

  • EVCM: Introduction, normal skin structures, skin neoplasms (melanocytic and non-melanocytic), and inflammatory lesions
  • BONUS WORKSHOP (in-person only): Complimentary hands-on workshop (3 hours) to master image acquisition with RCM and EVCM. If you're interested in attending the workshop, please make this selection during registration. Space is limited to allow for maximum interaction between attendees and faculty.

Pre-recorded Videos

All attendees will have access to the following pre-recorded videos and are highly encouraged to watch them prior to the start of the live program. Access instructions will be emailed to attendees prior to the start of the program.

  • Tips for image acquisition using confocal devices: Handheld-RCM (HH-RCM), Wide-Probe RCM (WP-RCM) and ex vivo confocal microscope (EVCM): Harris Ucalene, BS
  • Lentigo maligna margin mapping with handheld-RCM (HH-RCM) device and video mosaicking: Saud Alessi, MD
  • Pearls EVCM: Javiera Perez, MD
  • Tools to aid image acquisition during Lentigo maligna mapping: Cristian Navarrete, MD

Course Syllabus

Registrants will receive access to an online course syllabus after the program concludes, which includes recorded videos of the presentations/lectures. The syllabus will be available through January 31, 2024.

Who Should Attend

The target audience for this program includes includes clinical and non-clinical practitioners, dermatologists, dermatologic surgeons, pathologists, medical physicists, residents, fellows, medical students, researchers, and technologists.
