Overview

Neuro-oncology is a uniquely specialized field requiring providers to have advanced knowledge and understanding to optimize patient care. This on demand program provides a foundation for Advanced Practice Providers and other healthcare professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge of neuro-oncology and understand the complex management of patients living with cancers of the central nervous system.

Topics include an introduction to neuroanatomy, management of primary and metastatic brain tumors, leptomeningeal disease, central nervous system lymphoma, and the rapid assessment and interventions of neuro-oncologic emergencies. Best practices in supportive care and communication techniques the Advanced Practice Provider can utilize during difficult discussions with the neuro-oncology patient and their caregivers are also be presented.

Target Audience

This program is intended for Advanced Practice Providers, nurse practitioner students, physician assistant students, clinical nurse specialists, registered nurses, and physicians. We are pleased to offer complimentary registration to nursing students and registrants residing in low and lower-middle income countries.

Objectives
  1. Provide an overview of the basic neuroanatomy of the brain and spine.
  2. Interpret the radiologic findings in cancers of the central nervous system.
  3. Review primary and secondary cancers of the central nervous system.
  4. Gain competence in the recognition and treatment of neuro-oncologic emergencies.
  5. Employ evidence-based practice in supportive care for the neuro-oncologic patient and caregiver.
  6. Explore the advances in novel therapies and clinical trials for cancers of the central nervous system.
  7. Discuss the implications of a neuro-oncologic diagnosis in the pediatric population.
