Overview

Oncologic emergencies rapidly evolved in medicine over the last 10-15 years, developing in parallel with advancing cancer treatments and interventions. In addition to treating complications related to standard/traditional chemotherapies, the emergence of numerous new cancer treatment modalities has introduced a whole new field of patient complaints that have only recently begun to appear in emergency departments across the country. With very few dedicated cancer hospital emergency rooms, patients presenting with cancer emergencies were often inappropriately triaged, diagnosed, undertreated, or simply referred back to their respective oncologists without resolution of their emergent issues.

This on-demand program, originally recorded live on December 14–15, 2024, features experts from across the cancer treatment spectrum to provide emergency department providers and staff with the knowledge and skills needed to manage both common and uncommon cancer-related emergencies, including:

— Infections and Sepsis
— Pain Control and Palliation
— Interventional Emergencies
— Stem Cell Transplant / Targeted Therapy / Experimental Therapeutics Complications and Side Effects
— CNS Emergencies
— Radiation Treatments and Complications
— Hypercoagulation and Thrombosis, Dermatologic Side Effects, and Malignant Hypercalcemia

Each lecture concludes with a recorded Q&A with the faculty. For more information, including a detailed list of presentations, view the brochure from the live course.

This program is intended for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses involved in the treatment and management of patients with active malignancies/cancers who present with acute complaints in an emergency room setting.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify and recognize the most common presenting complaints of cancer patients in emergency rooms.
  2. Discuss current and developing cancer therapeutics with respect to their side-effects and complications.
  3. Recognize the current limitations and challenges that remain in efficiently addressing cancer patient emergencies.
