Overview

The overall goal of the course is to update the learner on the progress made in the area of image-guided intraoperative treatment of cancer. This course is composed of lectures and interactive audience participation encouraging the intellectual exchange of ideas between faculty and participants. Additionally, this year’s program will feature new educational workshops.

This course is directed towards surgical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, engineers, research scientists, technologists.

Workshop Topics

  • Multi-Spectral Optoacoustic Tomography - Attendees will be introduced to the next generation in molecular imaging through Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) technology, and will learn how MSOT combines the molecular specificity of optical imaging with the penetration depth and spatiotemporal resolution of ultrasound.
  • Fluorescent Image Guided Surgery - Participants will experience a valuable platform in precision surgery and diagnosis, and engage in real time simultaneous capturing of color image and two different fluorescent channel images for laparoscopic and open procedures.

Sponsors

Memorial Sloan Kettering gratefully acknowledges the following organizations for providing educational grants, financial support, or in-kind support for this live activity:

  • iThera Medical
  • Quest Medical Imaging

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is not only revolutionizing how cancer is diagnosed, but also how tumors are removed during surgery.

In the operating room, surgeons can now see tumors in extraordinary detail through real-time imaging using nanoparticles. This allows them to completely remove cancerous cells while preserving the healthy surrounding tissue, leading to better outcomes and faster patient recoveries.

Hear from our very own Dr. Michelle Bradbury, as she explains how this cutting edge technology works.

Objectives
  1. Develop familiarity with present and future intraoperative imaging technology advances.
  2. Enhance understanding of the role of molecular imaging and imaging analysis tools to highlight features of cancerous tissue for guiding biopsy, therapy, or decision-making.
  3. Facilitate integration of new intraoperative tools into standard surgical practice.
