Overview

Nearly 40% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these cases (>80%) are discovered only after a patient becomes symptomatic or during routine care for an unrelated issue. Less than 20% of cancers are detected through recommended preventive screening tests—a statistic that underscores a massive gap in effective screening, even for malignancies with established guidelines like lung and colorectal cancers. For cancers that lack standard screening protocols, general practice providers serve as the critical first line of defense. Because the signs and symptoms of early-stage cancer can mimic common, everyday conditions, maintaining a high index of suspicion is vital to avoid diagnostic delays that drastically decrease patient survival rates.[1-3]

This intensive, two-day course is specifically designed to equip primary care clinicians, advanced practice providers, and nurse navigators with the advanced clinical insights needed to optimize early cancer detection. Through an evidence-based approach, attendees will master precision testing paradigms, learn to navigate complex imaging and laboratory choices and proper diagnostic triage.

The curriculum will also address the crucial transition of cancer survivors back to primary care, focusing heavily on cardio-prevention and identifying delayed, high-morbidity complications of modern treatments including immunotherapy related adverse events which may present years later. Lastly, advanced imaging in non-cancer patients often discloses findings that are potentially cancerous but require additional testing for a definitive diagnosis. The majority prove benign, and as such, adherence to evidence-based surveillance guidelines is essential for cost-effective management.

This activity is designed for general practice physicians, family medicine physicians, internal medicine physicians, advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners and physician assistants), nurse navigators (registered nurses), and other primary care clinicians dedicated to improving early cancer detection, high-value diagnostic accuracy, and comprehensive survivorship care. We are pleased to offer flexible learning options, with the opportunity to participate live in person or virtually, or register for on demand access to the recorded program.

Flexible Learning Options

Live Participation (In Person or Virtually): Attend the course live on December 12–13, either in person at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center or virtually via Zoom. All live participants will have the opportunity to engage with faculty through interactive Q&A sessions, while those attending in person are also invited to a networking reception. Participants may claim credit for the live activity and will receive access to the online course syllabus following the symposium. Register for Live Participation

On Demand Access: View the recorded presentations, complete the enduring activity, and claim credit at your convenience. The on demand program will be available a few weeks after the live event. Those who register for on demand access will be notified as soon as the content becomes available. Register for On Demand Access

Objectives
  1. Adhere to evidence-based cancer screening and surveillance algorithms across a range of common malignancies.
  2. Recognize clinical signs and symptoms reflective of undiagnosed cancers and cancer-related treatment complications and follow precision lab and imaging paradigms.
  3. Implement guideline-directed diagnostic algorithms for potentially malignant incidental imaging findings (e.g., lung nodules, pancreatic cysts, and thyroid nodules).

Registration

We are pleased to offer flexible learning options, with the opportunity to participate live, either in person or virtually, or view the recorded program on demand following the course. Those planning to attend in person are encouraged to visit our Visiting Us page for information about accommodations, parking, directions, and other details to help plan their visit.
