Tobacco Treatment Specialists (TTSs) are professional clinicians who possess the skills, knowledge, and training to provide effective, evidence based interventions for tobacco dependence across of range of treatment intensities, in varying contexts, treatment modalities, and with different tobacco using populations.

The MSKCC 4-day, virtual Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program will train multi-disciplinary clinicians who work in different healthcare and community settings including primary care, behavioral health, addictions and rehabilitation settings, public housing, oncology settings, specialty medical care such as (e.g. pulmonary medicine, cardiology, oncology), and worksite wellness settings. The curriculum includes:

  • TTS Professional Development

  • Comprehensive Approaches to Tobacco Control

  • Tobacco Products

  • Biopsychosocial Model

  • Clinical Assessments

  • Behavior Change Treatment Strategies

  • Pharmacotherapy

  • Evidence-Based Treatment Processes, CBT, MI

  • Group Counseling

  • Documentation, Coding, Billing, Health Insurance, and Program Evaluation

  • Law and Ethics

  • Live Role Plays with Professional NYC Actors

This training program will be an exclusively live virtual experience. Registered attendees should have access to a computer with a webcam as this training is highly interactive. The training instructors will ask for attendee participation throughout lectures and group training activities. Additional pre-training instructions, including a Zoom link, will be emailed to registrants prior to the start of the program.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this training program, learners will be able to:

  1. Understand the Tobacco Treatment Specialists roles, responsibilities, professional development, and credentialing
  2. Describe and identify comprehensive approaches to tobacco control
  3. Demonstrate understanding of tobacco products in marketing, design, prevalence of use, and health consequences
  4. Identify and describe the biopsychosocial appproach to understanding and treating tobacco use
  5. Assess the comprehensive clinical assessment of the tobacco user
  6. Apply the principles of evidence-based, patient-centered, behavior change treatment strategies
  7. Demonstrate understanding of pharmacotherapy for tobacco use
  8. Analyze and evaluate treatment processes
  9. Use documentation, coding, billing, health insurance, and program evaluation
  10. Describe and identify law and ethics
