Overview

As the U.S. population continues to age, the number of older adults diagnosed with cancer is expected to rise, increasing the need for clinicians equipped to address the unique challenges of geriatric oncology. Despite this growing demand, common geriatric syndromes and the psychosocial needs of older adults with cancer often remain underrecognized and undertreated.

This evidence-based on demand program is designed to enhance the care of older adults with cancer by advancing clinicians’ knowledge, skills, and confidence in geriatric oncology practice. Through expert-led presentations, faculty examine the complexities of multimorbidity, age-related vulnerabilities, and the integration of geriatric assessment into oncology care. Sessions explore strategies for early disease recognition, reducing treatment-related harm, optimizing supportive care, and improving quality of life for older adults across the cancer continuum.

The program also highlights emerging advances in technology, digital health, and models of care that are transforming the delivery of geriatric oncology services. Drawing on multidisciplinary expertise, faculty provide practical guidance and evidence-based approaches to support informed clinical decision-making and improve outcomes for older adults with cancer.

Featured Keynote Address

Stephanie Nothelle, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, presents the keynote lecture. Drawing on her research and clinical expertise, Dr. Nothelle discusses innovative outpatient care models for older adults with complex and chronic illnesses and their implications for improving care delivery and patient outcomes.

Please refer to the brochure from the live event for a full listing of topics covered in this activity.

This activity is designed for physicians, advanced practice providers, registered nurses, CRNAs, residents, fellows, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, social workers, case managers, and other healthcare professionals involved in the care of older adults with cancer.

Objectives
  1. Identify strategies for implementing rapid diagnostic tools and workflows to accelerate timely and accurate disease detection in geriatric patients
  2. Discuss the importance of early detection and risk reduction strategies tailored to older adults to optimize health outcomes
  3. Evaluate emerging innovations in digital health and medical technology
